Abstract

RODRIGUEZ FUENTES, Rodrigo. YOUTH, CRISIS AND DEMOCRACY: TENSIONS AND BRIDGES BETWEEN THE CITIZEN COMMUNITY AND THE MAS-IPSP (2019-2020). Punto Cero [online]. 2021, vol.26, n.43, pp.25-39. ISSN 1815-0276.

The political crisis that Bolivia experienced (2019-2020) created the conditions for a dispute regarding the meaning of “democracy” that called young people to citizen mobilization. This article addresses the youth imaginary about democracy that young people, who belong to the two main political forces -MAS-IPSP and Comunidad Ciudadana-, built during the crisis in the city of Cochabamba. The results show that there are “tensions” between both imaginaries, which show a certain degree of social polarization. However, the existence of “bridges” that allow us to think in the future in common senses that strengthen the current democratic system is also visible. On this level, it is possible to think of democracy beyond a disputed signifier, to come to conceive it as a notion that articulates certain common horizons, which are essential for a democratic and plural coexistence.
