ABSTRACT International achievement studies have generated a discussion about national education standards that first focused on mathematics and language. Initially, other important areas of study were not considered. Current global transformation processes in technology and economy urgently require an educational discussion about these fields. This article aims at developing a competence model for basic technical and economic education (based on expert consensus), which makes it possible to describe core competences and to develop standards for these areas of education. Core contents, with which all youths will have to grapple, will be indicated. At the same time, a political- educational demand for an education segment is being formulated for all youths up to 10th grade, which needs to be implemented if youths are to be enabled to contribute to the shaping of these difficult fields in society and if they are to develop a future-oriented personality for themselves.
