Abstract The article analyzes the Bolivian and Peruvian education in the early twentieth century, through the contributions of Franz Tamayo and José Carlos Mariátegui about their pedagogical approaches. Differences and similarities are also set with regard to education. In Tamayo, it is the need to build the "energy and national character" present in the indigenous, through its own national education. While in Mariátegui, education needs a "national spirit" that can be through a comprehensive reform of education, with emphasis on higher education.
