Abstract

SANCHEZ MITRU, Mariana. Tourism, a destroyer or an enhancer of the Kallawaya worldview?. Rev Cien Cult [online]. 2023, vol.27, n.50, pp.39-66.  Epub June 30, 2023. ISSN 2077-3323.

The Kallawaya culture, declared World Heritage in 2003, is one of the most representative cultural exponents of Bolivia, but due to its high fragility and great threats, unfortunately it has a high risk of disappearing. Given this, the Kallawayas have opted for biocultural tourism as a strategic activity to safeguard their worldview. Through qualitative research based on the systematization of experiences, it is proposed to show how, under a sustainable, conscious and biocultural tourism approach, tourism can become an enhancer of this cultural expression, rather than a destroyer of it.

Keywords : Sustainable tourism; biocultural tourism; Cultural tourism; Intangible heritage; Integral tourism development; Kallawaya.
