Abstract

ORCHE GARCIA, Enrique. El tío, Dios de los mineros Bolivianos. REV. MAMYM [online]. 2024, vol.9, n.1, pp.25-52. ISSN 2519-5352.

Abstract The present work tries to give a vision as complete as possible about the Tio of the Bolivian mines, a deity very close to the miners who participates in certain diabolical characteristics. For this purpose, a first introductory part has been written that describes the distinctive features of the Devil, his arrival to the Andes from Spain at the hands of the Catholic Church and his presence in the ancient European mines. Dealing with the Tio itself, the character's meaning and myth are described, as well as his hypothetical presence in the Inca and viceregal times, the hypotheses about the origin of the myth and, finally, the role and characteristics of the Tio in current mining.

Keywords : Bolivia; Carnaval; Devil; mining; Oruro; Tio.
