Abstract

LOPEZ RAMOS, Diego Rodrigo  and  BOCARDO DELGADO, Edwin Fredy. Evaluation of the sustainability of hydrographic basins. Case study: Chili Basin, Arequipa-Peru. Rev. Inv. Cs. Agro. y Vet. [online]. 2022, vol.6, n.18, pp.453-462.  Epub Nov 04, 2022. ISSN 2664-0902.  https://doi.org/10.33996/revistaalfa.v6i18.182.

The Brundtland report introduced the concept of sustainable development as an objective to be achieved by society for its survival. From this, various scientists have developed methods and indices to measure sustainability. Applying these indices in the comprehensive management of water resources allows not only to evaluate the current state of the resource, but also to obtain very important information so that the competent authorities make decisions for its sustainability. One of the most used indexes by researchers is the Watershed Sustainability Index (WSI), an index applied in various basins worldwide. The objective of this research is to determine the sustainability of the Chili River hydrographic basin located in the city of Arequipa-Peru. The Watershed Sustainability Index methodology was applied to develop a basin sustainability assessment framework and, through a systematic process, the corresponding indicators were applied. The assessment results provide policymakers and water resource managers with a comprehensive view of the basin, which can be used to support integrated river basin management policies. Likewise, the proposed methodology can be used to determine the sustainability of basins with conditions similar to the basin under study.
