Abstract

ARZAPALO, Lucy Elsa Sanchez  and  SANCHEZ, Angela del Pilar Maria Acosta. Optimizing Agricultural Water Consumption in Lima: Best Practices and Efficient Irrigation Methods. Rev. Inv. Cs. Agro. y Vet. [online]. 2023, vol.7, n.20, pp.464-473.  Epub May 20, 2023. ISSN 2664-0902.  https://doi.org/10.33996/revistaalfa.v7i20.229.

In Peru, access to potable water is a major problem; the Peruvian Ministry of Housing, Construction and Sanitation indicates that only 70% of the population has access to potable water. In addition, the lack of adequate infrastructure and technology for wastewater treatment has led to the contamination of rivers and lakes in many parts of the country, which limits agricultural irrigation. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to analyze good agricultural practices and irrigation methods used to reduce water consumption. To this end, a bibliographic review was carried out, which included the collection of information through documentary studies. The literature was then systematized in order to understand the strategies to reduce and efficiently use water in the agronomic sector. It was found that the implementation of good agricultural practices, such as the efficient use of fertilizers and pesticides, pest and disease control, as well as crop rotation, can contribute significantly to the reduction of water consumption. In addition, various irrigation methods were identified that allow for more efficient water use, such as drip irrigation, sprinkler irrigation and subway irrigation. These irrigation methods, combined with good agricultural practices, can not only reduce water consumption, but also improve crop productivity and quality. It is concluded that the adoption of these practices and methods by farmers in Lima can be key to meet the challenge of sustainable water consumption in the agronomic sector.
