Abstract This article describes the main theoretical elements of the competency approach, determining its polysemic characteristics and the multiplicity of interpretations that come together in a complex of abilities, abilities and skills to solve problems and adapt to different circumstances and contexts, focusing on the comprehensive learning of students for an efficient work performance that responds to social needs and personal self-realization of them. The advantages of the competency-based approach have determined that the Bolivian University takes this approach integrating it to its educational processes, in a progressive manner, laying the foundations for the development of learning models in the university system.
