In recent years, numerous studies have shown relationships between job demands and resources and how these have helped to understand, explain and predict employee well-being. This article aims to determine the importance of work and academic engagement as a construct in the contribution of employees' mental state to good performance within the institution. Based on a qualitative approach, a systematic review design oriented to national and global documents was used. Databases such as: Scopus, Science Direct, Web of Science, Scielo and documentary analysis were used. The results show that engagement is directly related to teaching quality, active learning and student involvement in their educational instruction. Regarding work, engagement provides self-esteem, happiness, and immersion in the development of work. It is concluded that engagement provides those involved with mechanisms to face the adversities encountered in their workplace, concretizing the objectives proposed by it, pointing out the importance that institutions and companies should give to this construct in order to avoid its deterioration.
