Objectives: to determine the pathologies that induce hydrocephalus, the frequency according to sex and age, procedures and complications in children smaller than 13 years during 2000 - 2004 in the Hospital del Niño “Dr. Ovidio Aliaga Uria.” Design: retrospective and longitudinal study with revision of clinical histories. Setting: Services of Neurosurgery and Neonatology of the Hospital del Niño “Dr. Ovidio Aliaga Uria” in the five year-old period. Patients: those that received with the antecedent of increase of the perimeter cephalic and/or ecographics or TAC of abnormal skull, those that were selected according to the inclusion criteria and exclusion. Mensurations: they were carried out divisions according to group pediatric in: recently born, smaller suckling babies, bigger suckling babies, pre-school, school and youth. In those that were carried out procedures of clinical investigation and imagenologic and later on surgical treatment with shunt ventricle peritoneal and later control to the surgery. Results: the children with more frequency was that of the smallest suckling babies with 47.5%. Males incre more affected with 58.2% and the vanety more frequent that of congenital type with 58.9%. The installation of valve of successful shunt has done in 80.5%. Conclusions: the hydrocephalus is more common in males and in smaller suckling babies, and the most frequent cause of hydrocephalus was primary congenital.
