TERAN MIRANDA, Carlos Gustavo; TERAN ESCALERA, Carlos Nicolas  e  VILLARROEL ARRATIA, Patricia. Febrile seizures and associated infectious diseases. Rev. bol. ped. [online]. 2008, vol.47, n.2, pp.77-80. ISSN 1024-0675.

Objective: to determine the infectious disorder associated with the increase in temperature in patients with febrile seizure and the relation with the season of the year in patients admitted to Albina Patiño Pediatric Hospital. Methods: A prospective, cross-sectional study was conducted, including all the patients admitted with febrile seizure diagnosis, from July 2005 to June 2007. Results: a total of 88 patients were included. Infectious diarrhea was the major cause of fever (43%) followed by acute pharyngitis (37%) and bronchopneumonia (5%). Less common causes like celullitis, urinary tract infection and post-vaccine reaction were associated in a minor number of cases. Winter (42%) and spring (22%) were associated with the major number of cases in the year, generally secondary to gastrointestinal and respiratory contagious infectious disease. Conclusions: Gastrointestinal and upper respiratory infections are the most important causes of increase in temperature and secondary febrile seizure in this study. The relationship between winter and the beginning of respiratory and gastrointestinal infectious increases the possibility of febrile seizures.
