The objetive was to determine the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori in patients from middle and upper socioeconomic level with chronic gastritis and ulcer. We evaluated by esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGDC) to 776 patients, whom were divided in 4 groups according to endoscopic findings, to establish their socioeconomic level they were interrogated about the place and area of residence, educational level, occupation, level of monthly income, type of housing, water supply and drainage, household and access to health services. We found a prevalence of helicobacter pylori infection of62.9%, predominantly in males (65%) in relation to women (62.7%) and in the etareus group between 14 to 29 years old (57.2%); about the socioeconomic level, the highest prevalence of infection was found in the lower middle socioeconomic level (65.4%), with little difference in relation to high socioeconomic level (65%). The prevalence of helicobacter pylori infection in patients of middle and upper socioeconomic levels with chronic gastritis are significantly higher and similar compared to prevalences obtained in previous studies.
