Irrigation water in San Joaquín-Cuenca contains different contaminants, so it is essential to know them in order to avoid public health problems. Objective. To determine by physical-chemical and microbiological methods, the water quality at the catchment point of the irrigation canal "Toma de Narváez", San Joaquín. Materials and Methods. A non-experimental quantitative study was carried out. The sample consisted of 30 samples collected during one month from the Tomebamba River in the Balzay Alto sector of the San Joaquín parish in the year 2023. The data obtained were tabulated in SPSS version 26, and descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the information through the use of tables and graphs. Results. The mean of the studied parameters of the 30 samples was analyzed, where total dissolved solids (TDS) obtained a mean of 62.45 mg/L, electrical conductivity (EC) of 0.087317 mho/cm, nitrites of 0.017 mg/L, pH of 6.89, fecal coliforms (E. coli) of 282.97 NMP/100ml and absence of parasite eggs. Conclusions. The physicochemical and microbiological parameters studied are within the values established in the environmental quality and effluent discharge standards set forth in Annex 1 of Book VI of the Unified Text of Secondary Legislation of the Ministry of the Environment of Ecuador.
